Metamorphosis - Dark

...Eight tracks totaling 62 minutes show much stylistic diversity. This album is recommended for fans of Marillion (“Hey Man”, “Waking Up”, “Knowing All I Do Is Worth Nothing”), Porcupine Tree (“The Fight Is Over”, “Knowing All I Do Is Worth Nothing”), Pink Floyd (“The Fight Is Over”), Alan Parsons Project (“You”), Deep Purple (“Song for My Son”), Renaissance (the title track, which is also the shortest and has a line that reminds of “The Vultures Fly High”), IQ (“You”), Adrian Belew (“Waking Up”) and Dream Aria (“Where Do We Go Now”). “Knowing All I Do Is Worth Nothing” also includes a nice Banksian Hammond arpegiatto and is my favorite track on the album...

...There are still obvious nods to Floyd which I am sure many reviewers will pick up on but this release represents a definite step forward in terms of its individual identity. The opening of “The Fight Is Over” introduces both viewpoints well. “Hey Man” stands out and represents just how the ideas of Jean-Pierre are busy developing. A lovely acoustic start to “I’m Waking Up” introduces a song that when it finally ignites begins to hit home. For me, “Knowing All I Do Is Worth Nothing” is a track strong enough to dispel the fears within its title. It’s dark and moody, and sits elegantly mid set, succeeding in further drawing you in. “You” links in excellently, and convinces that this is an album to return to again. “Where Do We Go From Here” shifts and switches before leading to the closing Floyd like vibe of the title track.

...I loved Dark just for its terrific music, but to get sublime lyrics like throughout the album is just a wonderful bonus. From the "Fight is Over", to the sublime drum roll led "Knowing All I Do is Worth Nothing", Dark reached into my musical mind and reached a special area reached by only a very few select bands like Pink Floyd or Porcupine Tree. I have not heard anything else by Metamorphosis, so I am not sure if Dark is an anomaly or not. Just hearing the towering musical abilities streaming out of my speakers on Dark, song after song. Each tune is majestic with a soaring anthem-like quality that is just so exciting and inspiring. I would be very interested in checking out the rest of their catalog. But I do know for sure, "knowing all Mr Schenk does is worth..." a lot more than "nothing". He does all the vocals, keyboards, virtual "bass" and even the drums. Roger Burri and Olivier Guenat contributed the superb guitar work throughout. Jean-Pierre is clearly a very special talent. David Gilmour is without doubt a key influence, but Schenk brings Gilmour and the Floyd sound to another unique level. Not a higher level but a different level, somewhere way out there. Out there in the Dark.

...Previous albums by this outfit have been described as being pretty close to Pink Floyd in sound. And this is very much the case for this excursion as well, with the late ‘70s variety of their output as arguably the main influence for this production, but also borrowing select elements from the neo-progressive side of the art rock catalog at times. The overall sound is derivative, and while original explorations are few and far between you'll have a hard time spotting any replications as well. The album opener, Song for My Song, is one of the exceptions on this production though, as Black Sabbath-inspired riffs kicks off the proceedings in a tune where spacey synths and symphonic elements are added in to create a sound closer to an act like Porcupine Tree in overall sound...

...Luckily, the songs don't just sound like rehashes of Pink Floyd tunes. The opening track definitely goes in a different direction, beginning with a distorted guitar part that sounds far more like Demians or Porcupine Tree than anything else. As the song picks up in speed and intensity, comparisons to symphonic prog metal (Knight Area comes to mind) wouldn't be completely out of the question. And it is in these moments that the listener will likely be most satisfied, realizing that this is a multidimensional band capable of crafting fantastic and original songs. Other highlights that fit into this category include the dynamic "Hey Man" and the moody "Knowing All I Do is Worth Nothing."..

...The album title is an apt description of the music, which is consistently melancholy. Metamorphosis does a decent job of maintaining a dark atmosphere throughout, although there are instances where their lyrics aren't quite up to snuff and thus will lessen the blow of an otherwise powerful segment. On the flipside, there are times where lyrics, vocals and music all come together to create memorable moments, like when the chorus line of "power and money's the aim, my son!" comes in over the guitar solo in opener "Song For My Son". Likewise, the first minutes of "I'm Waking Up"-- featuring only distant keys, acoustic guitar and Schenk's voice--have a very hypnotic effect. Once we enter the song's instrumental section, however, the atmosphere suffers, mainly due to the drum production..

...This fourth release is VERY recommendable to friends of the abowe mentioned bands and genre!! This is NOT a clone album, this band shows excellence and superb musicianship and they have hints and allegations to the aforementioned sure, but they also bring their own idiosyncrazy to the whole "picture"!! ...Overall, Dark shows us a band that is very focused on slow-paced musicality, inbreeded in a melodic and harmonic amniotic liquid in which it breaths and feeds. The vocals are very unique in its tone, while always providing an emotional (and vivid) interpretation of the pessimistic and dark lyrics. The music ends up complying with the vocal approach, as it sets an emotional path that seems to want to escape the darkened tone by ways of very melodic sequences that try to impose some light upon a very grey atmosphere. The just mentioned atmospheres are very interesting and the duality between that slow paced (sometimes cut by an increased rhythm) darkness and the search for more enlightened and optimistic soundscapes by means of guitar soloing is refreshing and very well achieved...
